Heritage Interpretation stories in rural Greece

The project “ Heritage Interpretation stories in rural Greece –
The rural cultural landscapes” aims:

  • To promote the intangible cultural heritage that still exists in the rural areas of Greece in a way that will arouse interest and reflection in the public and the local community.
  • To promote interpretive walks as a tool for the promotion of cultural heritage and experiential tourism .
  • To spread personal interpretation in Greece, through good examples from people already trained in heritage interpretation.

In 2021, two interpretive walks have been implemented, with the following themes:
Cultivating the word ‘we’ means protecting the common needs’ (Dimitsana) and ‘The cycles of life determine the course of the journey’ (Kipoi, Zagori).

These themes were selected by the interpretive guides, after research and interviews with many members of the local community. In both cases, the themes highlight rural elements of these two regions, showing the role that intangible cultural heritage plays even today , not only for the inhabitants of rural Greece but for all of us.

The tours were implemented for the first time in June 2021, for a closed group of guests who, by experiencing first-hand what heritage interpretation is  can transfer its qualities to other stakeholders, such as local authorities, cultural and tourism professionals, etc.

Both interpretive walks will be available even after the end of this project, either as self-guided tours using the digital application we developed, or led by experienced, trained guides.

For more information and if you are interested in organizing your own interpretative walk, you can contact us at the Mediterranean Environment Centre, info@medcenv. org.

The project is implemented with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
